Haha- the famous ex question. This is what I have found. I can be friends with an ex as long as neither of us were invested too heavily in the relationship. Lol. Guys that I seriously dated and wanted to marry and was more serious with, I can still be cordial, but i wouldn't say friends. That is my opinion :)
If you once really loved someone with all your heart, even if you are married like I am it is better just avoid the situation all together and not be friends because a fraction of your heart still belongs with that person.
One of my dearest friends in the whole world is an ex... we dated for a year and it was pretty serious. I think it can work out depending on whether there are still feelings there- with the two of us there's nothing, literally, so it works. However, I think that's the exception, not the rule.
